The name Rumrunner’s represents the boats and people that used to ply the Alaskan waters during prohibition in the 1930’s running alcohol up and down the coast illegally. These folks were rough enough and tough characters who had super fast boats that could easily outrun the law on the water. Many communities throughout Southeast Alaska relied upon these boats for supplying all their drinking needs. There are many stories written about these characters in historical novels and books. Many of the props and decorations used throughout Rumrunner’s not only represent that crazy time period in Alaska’s history, but also bring the nostalgic, old town bar atmosphere of the s to modern day Anchorage.
The bar began operations in the spring of 1993 in the Historic Anchorage hotel. Through the years the small 1100 square foof room evolved from being a live R&B music club in to a bustling hip hop, mainstream dance & techno venue catering to a growing downtown club crowd. In the fall of 2002, Rumrunner’s moved to its new 4000 square foot location across the street on 4th avenue. Playing upon the same theme as the original bar, the new Rumrunner’s quickly became one of Anchorage’s hottest new clubs. With the addition of a grill as well aws the most dynamic light and sound show in Alaska, Rumrunner’s continues to evolve as a premier destination for locals as well as visitors to downtown Anchorage. Whether it’s great food & drinks, live national shows and events, talented local bands or DJs, Rumrunner’s is the place to be!
